This podcast episode is the first of a series of interviews that I recorded during my visit to China in May of 2010. You can read more about that trip on my travel blog at www.UrbanDesignPodcast.com/blog. During that trip, I interviewed several Chinese architectural firms and one of these companies was MAD.
MAD is an award-winning international company that was founded by Ma Yansong in the early 2000’s in Beijing, China. Today, MAD is a fifty-person architectural firm with a truly international team that builds their work around the globe. You can hear different languages spoken in MAD’s office, but the primary language for communication is English. The MAD office is surrounded by traditional Chinese architecture - hutongs – and is located in the historic part of Beijing. It is easy to get lost between those narrowed streets if you do not know your way around.
Absolute Towers in Toronto, Canada is one of the projects that MAD designed outside of China. The current project that MAD is developing is a Sinosteel International Plaza in Tianjin, China. You can see physical models of that project throughout the office. Although MAD presents their work in high-quality 3D digital modeling by using 3D MAX, it still has a physical model of each project in the office.
