Union Station inDenverl. By Arina Habich.

Union Station in Denver, Colorado, like many other railroad station sites, is going through a transformation. For decades, debate has been going on about what to do with the site and adjacent properties. Finally construction broke ground in 2009. Frank Cannon, who is a partner at Union Station Neighborhood Co., is overseeing the project.

Union Station is going to be a regional transportation hub. It will combine regional busses, street shuttles, light rail, and trains. The site is designed on two levels to better accommodate civic spaces and a regional bus facility. Nine to ten acres of public space will be provided. Public space network will be linked together with neighborhoods and will move people from different transportation locations. Although the site will be transformed, the historical Union Station building will be unchanged and will still be in need of renovation and new uses adaptation.

The transportation piece of the project will take four years. Development of the surrounding parcels will take longer and will be dependent on the economical conditions. Please follow the progress of the Union Station construction at http://www.unionstationnow.com.
