Ben Browm..

Social networking has become more popular over the past few years. As with any new technology, social networking has an effect on how urban designers do business. Once again, we have to adapt and adapt quickly. Ben Brown with Place Makers has been using social networking for a while in urban design projects.

Social networking - if you are using it right - can help to gain trust and move projects much more smoothly through public approvals.  On the other hand, if you ignore it, then opposition to your project could be quickly formed on Twitter by the neighborhood. Therefore, Ben Brown recommends joining the game and using social media to benefit the project. There are a lot of tools available and it is up to the needs of the project and what phase it is in, that should help to determine what kind of social media should be used.

From Ben Brown’s experience, social media helped to shorten approval time of the projects. Also, the community can have a voice in the project and ownership. And we know gaining a buy by the community will determine the difference between success and failure of the project.
