What is public space without a piece of art? Public art can enhance and complete the urban space or destroy it. Henry Beer has been an advocate for public art for years. Henry also wrote a paper about this subject called Realizing a Program of Public Art.
Civic art has played an important role in all cultures through the times. Henry is referring to public art as civic art. We all have different tastes and views, but as a culture, we do share commonalities. The art in public art is enduring and reminds us of values that this culture holds. Public art in past decades has become a mission for the artist to express himself, rather than the artist’s mission to change and inspire people. There are few pieces that still perform this noble mission. One of them is Chicago’s Jelly Bean.
Henry reminds us that civic art most of the time is a permanent installation and doesn’t disappear after a short period of time. Therefore we have to be vigilant about the selection of art pieces that are placed in urban settings.
