37. green infrastructure april 21, 2010

Pprovided by Dan Staley.

Green infrastructure is contrasted to gray infrastructure. Dan Staley described green infrastructure as plants, woody plants, landscaping, and parks; he also described the functions that they are perform. New elements in green infrastructure include photovoltaic panels and wind turbines.

Green infrastructure could be linked to sustainability. Indeed, they share many similar elements, such as the use of local materials, reduction of waste, and sensitivity to the surrounding environment. Dan Staley also stresses the importance of trees in the urban environment. Shading, cooling, and esthetic benefits are well known assets of trees in an urban setting. Trees also provide an economical benefit as well.

An element of green infrastructure that is not often discussed is urban gardening, yet it has been growing over the past few years in large cities. Some schools are dedicating land for gardening in an effort to educate students about plant materials and their life cycles. Urban gardeners grow many different plants, including from sunflowers, tomatoes, strawberries, and wheat.

Letters from Listeners

I really liked this podcast, It is about education more than anything regarding sustainability and urban tree growth when it comes to green infrastructure and urban design. The eco-flex products we make for walkways and sidewalks are right up this alley! Using a recycled product with low-carbon emissions such as eco-flex is one way we are trying to help the plantet!
Thank you for your information. Arina here is our website for you to check out if you have a moment. www.eco-flex.com
