36. sprawl repair kit april 14, 2010

Pprovided by Galina Tahchieva.

We all know the problems that occurred with the sprawl that happened in the decades after World War II in the U.S. Many different solutions have been suggested for ways to improve suburbs. One of them has been proposed by Galina Tahchieva and is called the Sprawl Repair Kit. You might already be familiar with the Sprawl Repair Kit, but you probably did not know that Tahchieva has written a new companion book called The Sprawl Repair Manual.

The book covers examples of a variety of scales that range from regional to a block. Tahchieva proposed an increase in density and workability and an improvement to the street face of the block. The Sprawl Repair Kit combines the following three main tools: design, regulatory, and implementation tools. Each tool is used on different scales for typical conditions that exist today in suburbia. These tools could be use by designers as well as developers and municipalities.

Although the Sprawl Repair Kit is mainly designed for U.S. development, parts of the kit could be effectively transferred to international projects that have the same problems.

Thanks Arina! Some of us are starting to talk about the Sprawl Repair Kit in Portland, OR (YES, we have sprawl here too!) so this podcast is quite helpful to get the word out! I retweeted your tweet about it as well.

This is far too much advertising and far too little substance. Please give us some quotes!
