David Rubin asserts that the twenty-first century is a century of landscape architecture, while the twentieth century was about architecture. His argument is that landscape architects are building spaces for society and forming human interaction.
OLIN is precisely the firm that practices these principles. The practice of the firm was formed around cultural issues and open space. The principles of the firm are to take design and integrate it into the exploration of natural systems of our world and its reflection in landscape architecture. As a result, the landscape environment for OLIN has become a place where diverse people interact harmoniously. The goal of the studio is to create a design that will foster that level of communication.
Social anthropology is reflected in much of OLIN’s work around the world. One of these projects is Bryant Park in New York. Bryant Park was an abandoned place. An original design proposed insertion of a new building allowing the transformation of the area into the most popular open space in New York City. Canal Park in Washington DC is another design project that is transforming the neighborhood and human interaction. Canal Park is a three-block-long open space designed for neighborhood use in a dense urban environment. In contrast to other projects, Canal Park is being constructed before residential developments to stimulate economic development in this neighborhood. It is becoming an icon that people are drawn to. David Rubin believes that a designed place is a success if it well attended.
