23. Urban Design for an Urban Century january 13, 2010

Book cover.

The book Urban Design for an Urban Century by Lance Jay Brown, David Dixon, and Oliver Gillham would be a great addition to any library. This book is a continuation of the work of these three different professionals. A true collaboration between the authors helped to create this book and open a dialog about urban design.

The book begins by examining the roots of urban design in the U.S. and  continues with recent examples, including urban design projects that have won AIA Regional and Urban Design awards. The book examines both national and international projects, which are analyzed using five principles of the urban century.

The authors talk about technology and its impact on our land and how we occupy the terrain. The development of the automobile is one example. This became one of the inventions that shaped our land in the 20th century. Transportation and how we move through the landscape will continue to drive urban design in the future. Changes in demographics will also bring about changes in the shapes of urban design. Therefore, places have to be more flexible in order to accommodate changes in urban areas.
