As a junior urban designer, Wong See Huat from Singapore had a chance to work on a few interesting urban projects. One of these projects was Vertical City in the Guang Ming central district of Shen Zhen, China. Wong See Huat contributed to this project while working for SCP Consultants Private Limited.

Vertical City is a transit-oriented development project that includes residential and business centers. There are different types of transportation that have been proposed to connect different parts of the project and to connect Vertical City to outside projects. The primary transportation mode of the project is  Sky Bus.  This bus line is located above vehicular and pedestrian traffic. There are also moving sidewalks 500 meters in length.
Due to the limited land space, the project was designed vertically rather than horizontally. This vertical design affected how uses and different project areas relate to each other. The concept of “carpets” was implemented here. A “carpet” is a block of development that has vertical mixed uses. “Carpets” vary in height from 21 meters to 50 meters.
As with any other large development project, Vertical City in Guang Ming will be built in phases.
