One of the books released in 2009 about urban design is called “Retrofitting Suburbia” by Ellen Dunham-Jones and June Williamson. This book looks into the projects that were built decades ago and no longer meet the social and economical needs of community.
This book is divided into two parts: argument and examples. In first part, there is a historical overview discussing how we ended up with so many isolated suburbs, enclosed and in-line shopping centers, and business parks on the outskirts of cities. Ellen and June show examples of what has been done with these developments to retrofit them for community needs today. Their examples are well illustrated and include figure ground time analysis along with regional context. Change in the project’s demographics, among other factors, and its effect on development are carefully examined by the authors. Their depth of detail helps to explain and follow the life of the project.
“Retrofitting Suburbia” has a Facebook group where you can follow public speaking and additional publications by the authors.
