Over the years, many car sharing programs have been initiated around the world. One of these programs started in Boulder, Colorado in 1997. A group of Boulder citizens were very concerned about minimizing their environmental impact and strived to leave a sustainable legacy for future generations. They took the issue of transportation to heart and made a commitment to minimize their automobile use. In 1997, the “Little Red Car Co-op” was formed. The momentum continued forward, and in 1998, Boulder CarShare was founded and incorporated as a Colorado non-profit.
The organization has grown greatly since then, adding additional vehicles to the fleet as membership revenue and demand permitted. Boulder CarShare received its 501(c)(3) status in 2006 and rebranded in January 2009 as eGo CarShare in order to bring its service to the city of Denver. As of October 2009, eGo CarShare has a fleet of 14 vehicles (11 in Boulder, 3 in Denver) and approximately 550 active members. eGo CarShare will receive its first significant, outside funding from a CMAQ grant that will be used to expand the Denver fleet to approximately 45 vehicles over the next 2 to 3 years.
eGo CarShare serves anyone who wishes to reduce their automobile usage or those who cannot afford to own and maintain a private vehicle. Families with a second car that is driven less than 10,000 miles are perfect candidates, as are individuals with no car who need one occasionally for running errands such as grocery shopping or doing laundry.
