The courtyards and landscape at the Institute for Forensic Psychiatry (IFP) were designed by Kevin Shaffer while he was part of the RNL Design team. He approached this project as an opportunity even though it looked like an undesirable project at first glance. Indeed, the project offered challenges, and the doctors, nurses and agricultural therapists all presented many requirements.

The final design proved that even a boring project could be turned into an exciting place with a vibrant design. Even though Kevin had a strict budget and many guidelines to follow, he was able to use a minimalist design to create a series of pleasant courtyards for different levels of psychiatric patients. This design was expressed in a continuity of lines, circular walking paths, a variety of seating areas, and careful selection of materials throughout the courtyards. Additionally, he used many sculptures and mosaics throughout the facility. The locations of these sculpture and mosaics were identified in the design guidelines by Kevin.

This is a lesson for all of us from Kevin. We should seek the opportunity in every project on which we work.
